Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy, an Indian billionaire businessman is one of the seven co-founders of Infosys. He has previously worked as the chairman, CEO, president, and chief mentor of the company before retiring and taking the title of chairman emeritus. He founded Infosys in 1981 and today, the company is a highly innovative software services global company listed on NYSE in the US and on the Bombay Stock Exchange in Mumbai.
Narayana Murthy’s early life and family
Born and raised in Karnataka’s Shidlaghatta in a middle-class Kannada Hindu family, his wife Sudha Murty is an educator, author, and philanthropist who is also the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation. The couple has two children – Rohan Murty and Akshata Murty. Rohan joined Infosys as an executive assistant to his father in June 2013 but left the company in a year. Akshata married Rishi Sunak in 2009.
Narayana Murthy’s career
Narayana Murthy started his career with the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad as a chief systems programmer. He then joined Patni Computer Systems in Pune, Maharashtra. In 1981, he started Infosys and became the CEO (1981-2002), as well as the chairman (2002-2011). He then stepped down from the board and took over as the chairman emeritus. In June 2013, Murthy was appointed as the executive chairman for a period of five years.
For the unversed, he founded Infosys with an initial capital investment of Rs 10,000, which was provided by his wife Sudha Murty. He was succeeded by co-founder Nandan Nilekani.
Narayana Murthy’s comment on working hours for youth
Appearing on a podcast, Narayana Murthy said India’s work productivity is one of the lowest in the world and urged the youth to contribute towards building the culture. He also drew parallels with Japan and Germany, two countries that implemented extended working hours after the Second World War.
He said, “India’s work productivity is one of the lowest in the world. Unless we improve our work productivity, unless we reduce corruption in the government at some level, because we have been reading I don’t know the truth of it, unless we reduce the delays in our bureaucracy in taking this decision, we will not be able to compete with those countries that have made tremendous progress.” Further, he added, “This is my country. I would like to work 70 hours a week.”

In 1967, Narayana Murthy went to the National Institute of Engineering for his graduation in electrical engineering. In 1969, he did his master’s from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murty’s love story
Sudha Murty met Narayan Murth four years before they tied the knot in 1978. In her appearance on a talk show, Sudha Murty said, “There was a friend of mine called Prasanna, who would bring me a book every day with Narayana Murthy’s name written on the first page along with names of various locations. ‘Narayana Murthy Istanbul’ ‘Narayana Murthy Peshawar’ I thought is this Narayan Murthy fellow an international bus conductor?” She expressed how she had a completely different image of him painted in her head, but which was not quite how she felt the first time she saw him. The duo soon became friends and started dating each other. “Me and Narayana Murthy are very different people. He never laughs. He’s very serious and also an introvert. He doesn’t speak much. He only speaks four to five sentences a day. If I ask him, ‘Narayana Murthy, why don’t you speak more?’, he will say, ‘You speak for both of us, so I don’t have anything left to say’.”
“I wanted to marry Murthy because he is an honest man,” Sudha Murty said.
