Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) seems to be on the brink of closure, reported ANI quoting Pakistani news channel – ARY News. The airline has cancelled over 500 flights in the past 11 days to severe fuel shortage.
Why is there a fuel shortage?
The shortage stems from the fact that the Pakistan State Oil (PSO) has reduced its fuel supply due to unpaid debts which led to a cancellation of 537 flights since October 13.
Word of motivation
Amid these challenging circumstances, PIA‘s CEO, Amir Hayat, penned a motivating letter to employees emphasising the importance of maintaining a collective focus on upholding organizational compliance and fostering teamwork as the airline navigates through financial hardships and the ongoing privatization process.
In an effort to address the situation, PIA recently made a payment of PKR 220 million (approximately USD 789,000) to Pakistan State Oil for a two-day supply of fuel, as reported by ARY News. The PIA spokesperson noted that the airline has disbursed PKR 500 million to PSO thus far for fuel provision, highlighting that daily payments are being made to address outstanding dues.
PIA continues to source fuel for its profitable routes, including destinations in Saudi Arabia, Canada, China, Kuala Lumpur, and others, as it strives to overcome this critical juncture.
