After Pakistan were beaten by Afghanistan in their last ICC World Cup match, they found themselves to be at the receiving end of many critics. However, they redeemed themselves in their game against South Africa in Chennai today.

Even though South Africa took the match home, Pakistan made the team, which has been scoring big in the game so far, struggle to chase a target of 271 runs.

During the first innings South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi claimed 4 wickets, while Saud Shakeel and Shadab Khan forged a vital partnership to enable Pakistan to reach a total of 270 runs against the Proteas. Saud Shakeel and Shadab Khan scored 52 and 43 runs, respectively. South Africa’s Marco Jansen also played a sensational game and took three wickets.

Chasing the target, South Africa lost a total of nine wickets. Towards the end of the game, it seemed like Pakistan really had a strong chance of making a comeback, but South Africa held their nerves and continued to fight it out. For the Proteas, Aiden Markram was the star as he scored 91 runs off 93 balls. His dismissal at the hands of Usama Mir brought Pakistan back into the game. He was dismissed in the 41st over when his team needed 21 runs to win and three wickets remaining.

However, despite the pressure and attack from Pakistan’s bowlers, the South African batters continued to fight and ultimately Keshav Maharaj sealed the game with a four against Mohammad Nawaz in the 48th over.

With this, Pakistan has now lost four consecutive matches and is now sitting sixth on the points table, while South Africa is crowning the table at the top with 10 points.
